  • A Message from Mrs. Cotter
There have been many changes to Math instruction over the last 5-10 years. If you've ever wondered why we teach Math differently today than we did when you were in school you are not alone. I came across this video which explains why and how we teach math the way we do today. I hope you will enjoy it and that it will give you some insight into the rationale and ideology behind Math Instruction today.

Birthdays are special days for all of us, especially children. Often children enjoy celebrating with their school friends by bringing in a treat to share. Fletcher Hills Elementary staff, students and the whole community has been working together to implement the District Wellness policy by asking families to send only nonfood items for birthday celebrations. Over the last few years we have worked on sharing ideas for happy and healthy celebrations without food. Our hope is that by informing parents from the start of school everyone will be able to work with us to keep our school day healthy and nutritious.
We have several reasons for working to promote wellness and healthy eating on our campus. Primarily, our reasons are health related. Many students across our campus have allergies; for some being exposed to certain foods can be life threatening. In addition, we know that too many sweet snacks can make children overweight and can cause cavities. In a class of 33 or more students we sometimes see treats come in three and four times a week which is not good for their health. Overweight children have a greater chance of becoming overweight adults which can lead to many health problems such as:
    Type 2 diabetes
    Heart disease
    Joint problems
    Some types of cancer
In addition, as we work with students toward achieving proficiency in all academic areas - we all recognize how precious the time we have is limited. We don't have enough time in our instructional day to stop instruction to celebrate every child's birthday.
If you feel it is important to send in a treat we ask that you send stickers, a pencil, erasers, or the like. Another idea is to join our school library Birthday Book Club.
Please help us maintain a healthy school environment by honoring our wellness policy. If you have questions, please ask your child's teacher.
    Mrs. Cotter
